Instrument Proficiency Check · KVNY
Rebuild instrument confidence with a clear plan.
An IPC evaluates instrument proficiency against the applicable standards. The instructor first reviews your recent experience, logbook, aircraft and goals, then confirms an appropriate session plan.
Currency and proficiency
Know what your instrument recency means.
Instrument recency under 14 CFR §61.57 includes recent instrument experience such as approaches, holding procedures and intercepting and tracking courses. If you cannot meet the applicable recency requirements, an IPC may be required before you can act as pilot in command under IFR. Your logbook history and circumstances determine the correct next step.
An IPC is a proficiency evaluation, not an instrument-rating checkride or a rubber stamp. The instructor reviews the relevant tasks, identifies gaps and determines whether the required proficiency has been demonstrated. Additional training may be appropriate before an endorsement.
Read 14 CFR §61.57Instrument areas that may be reviewed
- Instrument scan, control and recognition of unusual attitudes.
- Navigation, intercepting and tracking, and holding procedures.
- Precision and nonprecision approaches, missed approaches and approach briefings.
- Use of installed avionics, checklists and workload-management procedures.
- Partial-panel or equipment-failure tasks when appropriate to the aircraft and applicable standards.
Prepare for the session
Bring your pilot and instrument certificates, logbook, recent approach and holding history, and any prior IPC or training records. Share the aircraft make and model, installed navigation equipment, and the procedures you expect to fly.
A simulator or approved training device may be considered only when its qualification, the planned tasks, instructor qualifications and current rules permit. Confirm the format and aircraft directly before scheduling.
Plan around your aircraft and experience
Aircraft rental starts at $130 per hour, and flight instruction is $35 per hour. Aircraft and instruction are separate charges; the total depends on the selected aircraft, session length and any additional training. Confirm availability and current terms directly.

Send your instrument currency history, certificates and aircraft details. The school can discuss availability and an appropriate plan; any endorsement depends on the applicable requirements and demonstrated proficiency.
