About American Aviation
Professional flight instructors with decades of real-world experience — teaching at one of the nation's busiest general aviation airports.
Who We Are
Experienced Pilots. Dedicated Instructors.
American Aviation Sales & Services Inc. has diligently served local pilots and dedicated aircraft owners at the busy Van Nuys Airport since 1989. Flight training here immediately introduces our students to the specific professional procedures, exact radio phraseology, and heightened situational awareness required to operate safely in a complex towered environment. All provided instruction follows strict FAA Airman Certification Standards, ensuring every flight lesson effectively integrates core aircraft systems knowledge, precise weather decision-making, and critical risk management strategies into each progressive session.
Please inquire about current instructor availability and clearly describe the specific pilot certificate or specialized rating you are currently pursuing. Your unique lesson objectives and long-term milestones can then be thoroughly discussed in direct relation to your recent flying experience, your personal study plan, and all applicable FAA standards that must be met to reach your goals.

Your Training Environment
Why Train at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY)?
One of the Nation's Busiest GA Airports
Van Nuys Airport handles more general aviation operations than almost any other airport in the US. Training here means real ATC communication, real traffic awareness, and real workload — not practice in an empty pattern at a quiet rural airport.
Direct Access to Class B Airspace
KVNY sits just outside the LAX Class B veil. Pilots receiving instruction here regularly fly through and around Los Angeles Class B airspace, developing confidence and skill that pilots training at quieter airports simply don't acquire.
Diverse Training Terrain
From KVNY you can reach beaches, mountains, high desert, and multiple towered airports within 30 minutes. Cross-country training here is genuinely diverse — ocean, mountain passes, desert strips, and major metro airports all within reach.
Year-Round Flying Weather
Southern California's climate means minimal weather cancellations for VFR training, while proximity to the Pacific marine layer provides natural opportunities for IFR training without needing to travel to poor-weather regions.
Multiple Nearby Class D and Class C Airports
Burbank BUR (Class C), Camarillo CMA, Whiteman WHP, Santa Monica SMO, Long Beach LGB — all within easy navigation range. You will regularly visit controlled airports that most students never see until their checkride.
Central San Fernando Valley Location
Flight training is available at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), serving the greater Los Angeles area.
Our Approach
How We Teach
Purpose-Driven Maneuvers
Most introductory flight training often feels inherently confusing to newcomers because students are frequently instructed on what specific maneuver they are performing without being told why it actually matters for their development. A student might hear an instructor say, "Today we are doing steep turns," but they may not understand how that particular maneuver connects to the Private Pilot Certificate, the requirements of the FAA checkride, or the essential skills required to become a safe, competent pilot.
At American Aviation, we teach differently.
Before you ever leave the ground, we show you the Airman Certification Standards (ACS). The ACS is the FAA's official testing guide and grading standard for pilot checkrides. A Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) uses those standards to test you during your oral exam and flight test.
Instead of simply saying, "Today we are doing steep turns," we explain:
- Why steep turns matter.
- How they improve aircraft control.
- How they are graded under the FAA ACS.
- How they connect to checkride expectations.
- How they make you a safer and more proficient pilot.
Every single lesson we provide has a specific, defined purpose. You will know exactly what you are doing, why you are doing it, how that task will be evaluated, and how it moves you closer to passing your FAA checkride successfully through rigorous planning and adherence to educational milestones required for your target rating. Checkride.
Scenario-Based, Confidence-Building Instruction
We utilize scenario-based training so students learn with maximum efficiency and build necessary flying confidence at a faster rate. Most training programs at other schools incorrectly limit students to an extremely narrow set of repetitive routes between pre-planned waypoints, which is fundamentally inadequate for developing the comprehensive, real-world piloting skills needed for diverse aviation operations.
Piloting is entirely about maintaining smooth, confident flying even when facing new situations or operating under significant pressure. When flying alongside our experienced instructors, you will learn instinctively how to manage your aircraft, navigate complex airspace, and handle the unexpected with the precision required of a professional pilot in the field.
- Divert to an airport you've never been to — selecting a field, navigating, descending, and entering the pattern without hesitation.
- Fly a difficult instrument approach at an unfamiliar airport, even one you're diverting to unexpectedly.
- Navigate through Los Angeles Class B airspace confidently and obtain clearance from ATC on your first attempt.
- Handle ATC workload in busy Southern California airspace without becoming overwhelmed.
- Make real-world go/no-go weather decisions — not just textbook ones.
Written Examination Prep
We help you pass the required FAA written exams on your very first attempt—and we strive to help you achieve a high score. Any specific question you miss during the written exam becomes a required topic you must explain perfectly during the rigorous oral portion of your upcoming FAA checkride as you prepare for your certification. Checkride A high written exam score makes your subsequent oral examination significantly easier to navigate. We point you to the exact study resources required so you know precisely what to focus on during your preparation, and we ensure you understand what high-quality performance scores actually look like for your specific certificate.
Honest Study Expectations
Flight training requires significant studying outside of your scheduled flight lessons. We are transparent about this requirement from your very first day. Pilots who proactively study all FAA materials before arriving at the airport make much faster progress, spend less money on redundant instruction, and pass their checkrides with greater confidence. We tell you exactly what to study, when to study, and why—so no lesson is wasted reviewing ground concepts you could have mastered at home.
The Responsibility is on Us
At American Aviation Sales & Services Inc., we believe the professional responsibility to prepare you properly falls on us. You are paying for high-quality instruction, clear structure, expert guidance, and a real path toward passing your tests. Our job is to provide excellent training at a fair and honest price, while ensuring you always understand your current status and exactly what remains required to succeed in your aviation journey.
At many flight schools, especially for younger students or those brand new to aviation, it is easy to get trapped in a system where they keep spending money without receiving clear progress reports or answers. A student may be assigned an instructor who is unorganized, unmotivated, or more focused on protecting their own job status than helping the student succeed. The student may fail stage checks or even an official checkride, then be told it was entirely their fault, even when the training was poorly structured, inadequately explained, or not properly managed.
This situation happens more often than many people realize. Students can spend thousands of dollars with an instructor who does not clearly explain the FAA standards, fails to provide a real plan for measurable improvement, and does not take personal ownership of the student's progress. Then, when the student struggles to advance, the blame gets shifted onto the student instead of anyone asking whether the quality of instruction, the clarity of communication, or the overall training plan failed them.
We do not believe in that kind of flight training.
At American Aviation Sales & Services Inc., we treat your success as our primary responsibility. We genuinely care whether you understand the complex material. We care whether you are progressing according to your schedule. We care whether you are being prepared correctly for your upcoming FAA checkride. We care whether you are happy, feeling confident, satisfied, and willing to return for more training to reach your career or recreational goals.
We treat all students the way paying customers deserve to be treated: with professional respect, total honesty, clear instruction, transparent and fair pricing, and a serious, unwavering commitment to helping them pass their exams and fly safely.
